Statement on CPI Revision and Inflation-Indexed Securities

September 28, 2000

The Bureau of Labor Statistics today released revised index numbers for the consumer price index numbers previously reported for January through August 2000. The Bureau of Public Debt wishes to clarify how this action will affect outstanding inflation-indexed securities.

According to the regulations governing both marketable inflation-indexed securities and Series I Savings Bonds, calculations of principal value and interest payments or redemption values are not adjusted if previously reported CPI figures are revised. Thus, pursuant to these regulations, Bureau of Public Debt will continue to use the previously reported CPI numbers for these calculations.
