Converting Paper Savings Bonds to Electronic Form
You can now contact us to start the process of converting your paper savings bonds to electronic form.
When you make the SmartExchange, you trade paper savings bonds for electronic savings bonds held in TreasuryDirect, the online system that offers you 24-hour access to your Treasury securities.
To make the SmartExchange:
- Open a TreasuryDirect account, if you don't already have one. Simply complete our easy, online application to get started.
- Tell us you want to convert your paper savings bonds to your TreasuryDirect account. The easiest way to notify us is to send an e-mail using the "Contact Us" link in your TreasuryDirect account.
- Wait for us to send you an e-mail telling you we have prepared your TreasuryDirect account for conversions.
- Login to your TreasuryDirect account, and click "My Converted Bonds" near the bottom of the Welcome page.
- Click "Manage Direct," then select "How to Convert My Paper Bonds" for complete instructions.
Once you make the SmartExchange, you no longer have to keep track of paper securities.
